Writing in Public, Too: NaNoWriMo Day 16

Up at a decent hour this morning. Made some coffee, and hit my email, which had been somewhat ignored the day prior. After catching up a bit, and continuing to comment on a couple of interesting industry threads I’ve been participating in (one on ethics, another on productivity), I started in on publishing business stuff. Specifically, I put up requests for ARC reviewers in a couple of locations. The first episode of the Arthurian saga will be coming out next month. I’m actually a bit behind where I ought to be, in terms of finding potential readers for “advanced reader …

Writing in Public, Too: NaNoWriMo Day 15

Got in a burst of writing today before taking off for work. I seem to be doing less well with the morning writing than I’d have liked. On the one hand, I feel very accomplished through the day – because I’ve already done my writing before I have to jet out to work. I’m not having that nagging in the back of my head all day long. On the flip side, I find myself REALLY wishing I could be back writing, while I am at work. So it’s not 100% effective. And I’m not finishing as much in the morning …

Writing in Public, Too: NaNoWriMo Day 4

Had a great day today! Up, breakfast of yogurt (raspberry with one of those packs of chocolate shavings on top to pour in). Then I was out the door around 10am to go to soccer with the kids. Got to play with them some, and watch them play. Always a good time. One of them managed to step into something the dog left behind, shortly before departing. That put off plans for a little while, but we bustled off to Target. I carried her  up to a shopping cart, plopped her inside for a ride, and zipped inside. A short …

Writing Tech: Samsung Tab Pro and Apple iPad Mini

I’m more or less always on the lookout for cool new bits of tech to use in my writing. I have a pebble watch that I can use to control the music player on my phone, which in turn can be connected to either a bluetooth earbud or a portable Jawbone speaker. I also like writing on the go. So I’ve pretty much always had something handy to write when I am not sitting at my desk. In fact, I get a good chunk of my work done when NOT sitting at the big PC on my desk. I find …

NYT Can’t Get It Right: Amazon and Hachette

So I read the NYT article on the Amazon and Hachette SNAFU, and it was too good to pass up. There’s just too much nonsense written into this blatant attack piece. From the opening image – a piranha with the Amazon smile – on through the text, it’s one slam on Amazon after another. Except, of course, that the writer (Bob Kohn) has no clue what he is talking about.

In Vino, Mortis (A Dead Britannia short story)

And now, for a taste of things to come! Ouch, shades of Mortal Combat aside, I’ve written a short story, more or less a prelude to the Kickstarter novel about Dead Britannia, a new serial about Britain just after its abandoned by Rome – the days when the legend that became King Arthur was born. But this Arthur must deal with a plague of the living dead, instead of Saxons! The Kickstarter is over, but the stories will be coming soon! Here, we see the plague just before it reaches Rome. It’s in the outlying towns, and sweeping across the Empire …

A few updates…

Writing Update Had a decent writing day today. Despite a lot of other things going on, I managed to get in 2300 words. That’s not bad! If I can do 2k a day, that’s 700k or so in a year, well beyond my goal. Always good to get a little extra in when I can, though, because I know there will be some days when I just can’t.   Quick Change to the 2014 Goals I got some excellent advice from friend and fellow writer Rayne Hall regarding those goals I set the other day. She suggested I break up …

Writing in Public, Too: Day 14

All three of our kids have their own laptops. Not great or fancy laptops, mind; but they have something they can work and play on. I think it’s important for them to become computer literate at a young age, so we’ve prioritized their having regular access. One of the girls uses my old laptop as a hand-me-down. It’s a good machine – was a GREAT machine when I bought it – but it’s starting to fail now, so passing it on seemed like a good plan. Except now it’s starting to have enough issues that it’s interfering with her Minecraft …

Writing in Public, Too: Day 12

Another work day. One more of those before the weekend, where hopefully I can get a little ahead on word-count. If you’ve been reading this for a bit, you’re probably familiar with my schedule already. Up at 6am. At work by 7am. Today was a messy work day… I didn’t get out until 5pm, and had to skip lunch to even get out then. I ate my chicken and swiss cheese sandwich in the car after work. Seedless soft rye, which is a nice treat – haven’t had it in years, and had forgotten how much I liked the stuff. …

Writing in Public, Too: Day 11

Another work day. Out the door by 6:30am, and back home around 5pm. Long doggone day. 😉 Spent an hour alternating catching up on some emails with working on Starship edits. Then I made dinner for the family. After dinner, it was back to work for a little while; then a break at 9pm to watch a show with my wife, then briefly back to work again. Didn’t have the stamina to stay writing for too long. Just feeling very burned out today. Not burned out on the writing – wish I had more energy for it, honestly. But I’m …
